The Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) operates and funds school-based programs that connect college, community and corporate volunteers with Stamford Public School students. Our district, comprised of 16,000+ students spread among 21 schools, has many cultural socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2014-15: 52% received free/reduced lunch (an indicator of poverty); 67.3% were minority; 16% were English Language Learners; 68 languages were spoken at home; 38% came from homes in which English was not the primary language. Economically disadvantaged students have traditionally been outperformed by their more affluent peers. SPEF works to close the achievement gap by providing direct service intervention programming and resources at critical transitional stages in youth development: Pre-K to Kindergarten, Elementary to Middle School; Middle to High School. In 2015/16, SPEF provided direct service to 17 Stamford Public Schools, serving 734 students with our Stamford Mentoring Program (72% of those we served were economically disadvantaged). SPEF also provided Math Tutoring for 97 ninth graders, gave away 5,000+ new books, and served 232 children/parents through our Family Literacy Nights in Stamford's south end. This school year, 2016/17, with your support, we will be providing programs in all 21 Stamford Public Schools! Help us to Educate and Empower Stamford's Next Generation!
